Lucerne city guide
Besides my tours, there are many other things to do in Lucerne. Here is an overview of the other activities, and some tips and tricks for your stay.
Old town Lucerne
Stroll through the beautiful lakefront old town with its beautiful buildings.
Gorgeous architecture end endless shopping opportunities are waiting for you in the narrow streets with many boutique stores.
Enjoy the moment in one of the many riverfront Restaurants or a Cafe.
Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal)
Visit the impressive, colossal, and well-preserved Lion Monument. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
It is located close to the Gletschergarten and the Alpine Museum.
Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)
It's the landmark of the city and the second-longest wooden covered bridge in Europe.
As part of the city fortification, this beautiful wooden footbridge was constructed in the first half of the 14th century.
The bridge is named after the nearby located St. Peter's chapel. In the 17th century, paintings were added with scenes of Swiss history.
A walk over this bridge is a must-do activity when you are in Lucerne.
Transport Museum of Switzerland
From aviation to railways - you will find here a vast selection of vehicles of transport vehicles from the past.
Perfect for the whole family, especially on a rainy day, as there is something to do and explore for everyone.
Located at the Transport Museum is also the Swiss Chocolate adventure by Lindt. There you can learn a lot about Swiss chocolate and the history behind it.
The best way to get there is by boat. The boat station is called Verkehrshaus-Lido, and it's just a 10-minute ride from Lucerne central. In the winter time I recommend taking the bus or the train, as there are infrequent boat departures.
Other top rated museums and exhibitions in Lucerne:
Rosengart Collection Museum
Bourbaki Panorama Lucerne
Glacier Garden of Lucerne
Gameorama (interactive game museum)
Cruise on Lake Lucerne
I highly recommended taking a cruise on Lake Lucerne. You can make various round trips with different durations.
During the summer months, you can get a ride on one of the historic steamships. It will be an outstanding experience.
Needle dam
Have a look at the needle dam on the Reuss river. This masterpiece of 19th-century engineering has been built between 1859 and 1861 and renovated between 2009 and 2011.
This dam is still used to control the water level of Lake Lucerne manually by removing or inserting the timber needles. This can prevent floods and low water levels during dry weather periods.
Spreuer bridge (Spreuerbrücke)
Another bridge in Lucerne that deserves your visit - the Spreuer bridge is the oldest wooden bridge in Switzerland. The first bridge was built originally in the 13th century. The extension to the left bank was completed in the year 1408. The bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1566 and then rebuilt.
It was the only bridge where people were allowed to dump chaff (in German Spreu), therefore the name Spreuerbrücke.
Musegg wall and its nine towers
Visit Lucerne’s historic fortification. The 870 meter (0.54 miles) long wall was built in the 13th century. From April until the end of October you can walk on the wall and visit the towers. From one of the towers you have a fantastic view of Lucerne.
